... to laugh often and much;
to win the respect of
intelligent people and the
affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of
honest critics and endure the
betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed
because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

In my opinion, this is the best definition for success that I have heard in my life. A definite thing that I know that I want to do-and hopefully my peers do, as well- is to be successful. Gaining the respect, adoration, and envy of those around me would be ideal, but the idea of sleeping at night knowing that I did something right is a better feeling.
To win the respect of your peers is one of the most important things in the world.To go through life with true friends. These both are two of the best things that you can achieve.
This is a fantastic piece of literature and I think that this is a perfect example of success with, I guess, stepping stones built into the poem that shows and explains what success actually is. Bottom line, I think that Emerson sets the paving stone for success.
I believe this poem defines "Success" in a very thought out process. The definition of success varies by the person and every line in the poem is it's own definition.
This definition of success is a very meaningful one. The way Emerson defines success is somewhat different than others. In my opinion, it is telling me to make the best out of everything that comes my way and to be a positive influence. Success is defined by what the person wants to succeed in.
I think that someone can not say how other people can be successful because Success is determined by yourself, not by any other person. There might be standards in the world today about what is successful and what is not, this should not be used to deem someone successful. People are successful when they feel that they have felt that they have accomplished everything they need to, not when someone tells them they have.
This is a very true and meaningful piece of literature. Success shouldn't be about money and pricey goods but it should be based around the differences in the world you make and how you feel about what your doing.
I believe all these different aspects of life are pieces of success. Although these are signs of success I feel the number one sign of success is within a person. Knowing that you did all you could, that you were striving in what you wanted to make of yourself and never gave up is true success.
This man has a very different view of what success is. For most people, success is about making money which, in turn, leads to happiness. Fortunately, this man's point of view says that success is about being happy and a positive influence on both others and yourself.
In my opinion, I think Ralph Waldo Emerson really defined the word and meaning of success in this poem. Each line makes a new statement and emphasizes what success really is. This poem really hit the spot in my opinion with what the word "success" really means.
These both are two of the best things that you can achieve.
Emerson shows this belief in this poem. I think Emerson's main point earn the respect of your family and friends and you will have a happy life.
Success is not determined necessarily by a result, but it is determined by the effort put in. If one does not try but "wins" or comes out on top, it is not nearly as satisfying as giving it your all even if you lose.
Although a Great definition of success, success may not be able to be defined. for example, successful for me could be making 200k a year but successful for my friend could be 150k a year. success is determined by how you view being successful. if you are happy with yourself and are achieving your goals of life, then i believe success is achieved.
I think this is a different vision of success that also has truth to it. Most people think success is fame, fortune, and happiness, but in fact the only thing you need for success is happiness. To get this happiness you just need to start thinking less of what other people think about you. If you are happy with yourself and lived you life with no regrets then you truly are successful in my opinion. Even if things aren't going too well for you, you cannot look to the dark side. To be happy and achieve success you need to look past all the bad things, weather you are ill or in a time of need, just keep your head up and you will make it through. In doing so you will be happier and just enjoy life while it lasts, because you do not live forever.
The definition of success varies depending on the person. Many people believe that success is making a lot of money, having a big house, driving expensive cars, and living an expensive lifestyle. However, some people's version of success is achieving happiness as well as their own personal goals. This does not necessarily mean making a lot of money or driving nice cars. Success comes when you are satisfied with your life and live everyday to the fullest. As long as your happy and doing what you love, success is not hard to find
From my perspective, Ralph Emerson's remarkable piece of literature define's the true and naked meaning of "success." I hands-down agree with my peers when majority of them believe that success is usually determined by how much change you've put into yourself and others around you.
Success is measure by how truly happy you are in your life. My parents always told me its never about how much money you make or how much power you have, its about how happy you are in your own life. Do something you love to do in life and you will be successful. Treat people that way you want to be treated and you will be successful.
