"THE WAR AGAINST CHRISTMAS"
"Merry Christmas! I mean, "Happy Holiday!" No, that's not right. "Happy Winter Solstice!" There you go. Now, I'm politically correct, tolerant, diverse...whatever the buzz words of the day may be...today, the day after Thanksgiving, we must follow the directive of the consumer world and embrace, Black Friday - the insane rush to grab the door-busting bargains and deep discounts on [1] Christmas gifts; [2] holiday shopping; [3] or Winter Solstice shopping (...pick ONE...). No, I'm not being sarcastic...just read the headlines. So, what are your thoughts on this hot-button topic?

I think it all matters on who you're talking to. If they're a certain religion than say whatever they are or just "Happy Holidays." I remember my old principal didn't like having Christmas stuff up, but we could had Hanukkah stuff up. I think even if you don't celebrate a certain holiday it should just be a time for happiness, good cheer, and family. Who really cares what you say. I respect all different beliefs around this time and it really doesn't matter.
What do you think Mr. Flynn?
My view is that saying Happy Holidays is a direct attack on Christianity and Catholicism. Christmas is our holy day. We must not allow it to be secularized and destroyed in the name of political correctness. If a store says Happy Holidays, I kindly give them a small card that states if they refuse to recognize Christmas they will loose my and other Christians business.
It should stay merry christmas. Christmas is OUR holiday. Christmas is not just a time for gifts, its for remembering why were celebrating this holiday. Being politically correct should have NOTHING to do with religious views. I'm catholic i want you to say merry christmas to me because thats what i would say to you.
I think that this has gotten out of hand. We cant say "Merry Christmas" anymore because people say that its offensive to people of other religions. The weird part is that the people who brought this up are catholics themselves. I have many friends who are of other faiths and they all say merry Christmas and then they said that they are not offended if people say it to them. They said they're MORE offended when a person changes the greeting because it separates them from the crowd.
I wholeheartedly agree with Matthew and whoever FourStringBrass94 is. Deek also brings up a good point, and he reminds me of a similar situation that happened to my elementary school. it wasn't with our principal, but we had a teacher who gave my friend a B on a project in which he created a very detailed Christmas display just because of its religious influence. now that's religious discrimination.
"Happy Holidays!" Bah, humbug! it displays too much secular influence, almost abuse, of something like Christmas that goes beyond a "holiday".
"Merry Christmas!" Now doesn't that sound a lot better and more original?
I could care less what other people think, I'm gonna say Merry Christmas where ever I go. This is also why a few years back my priest handed out buttons that he wanted us to wear when we went shopping. The buttons said on them, "You can wish me a Merry Christmas."
corn?
haha i love the merry christmas buttons idea thats great!! i understand saying happy holidays to ppl instead of merry christmas b/c many ppl celebrate another holiday at this time like hanukkah or kwanza- how is that disrespectful to christians i dont understand?? christmas is not an american holiday that everyone shares- its a holiday religious in nature celebrating the birth of christ and all the good he stood for- saying happy holidays to someone is a way of not prejudging them to be christian by the way they look, and respecting that their religious beliefs (and holidays they celebrate) might be different from yours and thats ok!
what bothers me is ppl who cant APPRECIATE christmas or APPRECIATE what christ stood for regardless of their personal religious views- to me christ is about Luke 11:37-44 "woe to your pharisees..." if you study the history of the time and understand what Judaism was turning into you can surely appreciate christ's attempt to return religion to what it ought to be- to focus on the way ppl treat one another and giving alms to the poor and being good at heart rather than washing before you eat bread- surly ppl of ALL religious faiths can relate to that and appreciate the purity and holiness of that message- ppl that hate on christmas and hate on christ really bother me especially during the chirstmas season!!!...
Louis...complete thoughts, please...I can imagine if even "Christmas" songs came under attack as well..."I'm dreaming of a white...er...happy holiday..."? Oh, and I love shopping for a "holiday tree"...sweet! Might as well stick some shrubbery in the corner and fire up the Sears bushwacker and start "trimming the tree" - ha, ha!
"Holiday tree"? Ha ha ha!
I have those buttons!!!!! I wear them every were this time of year
But Mr Marcus- Christ came to start a new church not perfect Judaism. The Catholic faith is equally about the way we treat one another and the ritual. Thats were Catholics an Protestants split.
Black Friday is out of control and people have gotten killed. As to saying Merry Christmas being politically correct is insane and insulting. If you are adressing a stranger simply say Merry Christmas or happy Chanakka if the person does not celebrate either, it is still the thought that counts. All im saying is people and buissness should be allowed to say Merry Christmas and as for public places they should just have Merry Christmas and Happy Chanakka.
It Doesn't Matter To Me Really. I Wouldn't get offended if someone even said Happy Hanukkah. Its the thought that counts i guess. Sure Merry Christmas rolls off the tongue and its a natural thing to say this time of year. If it all comes down to it don't mention anything. Just say have a good one...
To me, it doesn't matter if someone says Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah, the person saying that is just trying to be polite and kind. I wouldn't be offended if they say the wrong holiday, its just the thought that counts.
yeah...i agree with everyone else.
I guess I must have missed the news. Has Christmas been banned in this country? I didn't see it mentioned on the TV.
Or are some people getting into a dither over the use or non-use of two words? Maybe it's time to focus on more pressing and urgent stuff?
You must remember that America was founded by Protestants and as the years passed, Christianity became a more widely accepted religion, therefore the U.S. is a Christian Nation. As for anyone who has a problem with that, go back to your country or celebrate Hanukkah, and I don't say that in any offensive way against Jews, I just DO NOT want to take any part in any of this melting pot business.
I also think it is sad that you people are debating something this ridiculous. SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
...therefore the U.S. is a Christian Nation. As for anyone who has a problem with that, go back to your country or celebrate Hanukkah, and I don't say that in any offensive way against Jews...
Mr. Cheney has indeed said it all.
Make your own judgement about his reasoning and temperament. And why he chooses to hide behind a false name.
On the front page of this blog site, reference is made, under the heading The War on Christmas, to an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer by Connie Schulz. Read the article:
http://www.cleveland.com/schultz/index.ssf/2009/12/dont_browbeat_store_clerks_wit.html
The reason for this article, in the first place, is to bring to my students a "debatable" topic for a writing class...since, as a Christian and a consumer, we find it ironic that there is public debate - not from me - dithering over "politically correct" phrasing during this "holiday" season...to me, there aren't any more pressing issues than values and tradition...
