"Man is his own star; and the soul that can
Render an honest and a perfect man,
Commands all light, all influence, all fate..."
"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till"(Emerson, "Self-Reliance").
So, my readers, what do you think? Is it better to be INDEPENDENT, rather than dependent on someone else or agency that makes one a "servant" to that person or agency?

This was a very difficult post to reply on for its meaning is something I never thought about, but it really made me think more so than all the other posts.
I think I'd rather not have to depend on someone to do something for me. I'd like to be able to express myself and not have someone else do it for me. If we had a gov. where we made our own decisions for ourselves we'd be living in Greek's old direct democracy, but I also feel as though I'd like to have someone doing the work for me. That's where our representative democracy comes from. Not everyone in this world can run our country for we have too many people in our country for everyone to speak out. I never really thought about self-reliance before I always just went with the luck of the draw and went on from there. Nothing in life is ever given to you, so in a sense I rely on myself to pull through and just keep on going. As lazy as I am and would rather have someone run my life so I could have no work ever, I will always do what I have to do to make the best of life.
This is a post i wasnt ready for it really surprised me. I think we should be independet, make our own desicions, and live our own life. However, this does not mean we do not need help from time to time. I know i need help, alot of it given to me by my family not just immediate but extended also. Without them I dont know where I would be also we need help sometimes from our friends and from our teachers. But, we do reach a point in our lives when we must go out on our own and use the knowledge and help we recieved over the years to guide us through our lifes. We must also work hard, enjoy our life, and be ourselves. Most importantly we must keep God in out lives.
Introspective, thoughtful, my students! do you know "where" I am going with my question? Guess! I am glad I caught you by surprise!
Mr. F
I think with your voting, your posts on success and being victorious are leaning to some sort moving forward idea. The idea of being able to inspire yourself to move on. In a national sense I think your going for what our country stands for, but I really don't know. You have me stumped.
This is one of those "yes-but-no's" type of posts. It's good to be independent, because it could make you stronger, physically or mentally, and being independent at a young age, will get you ready and used to when you leave for college or move out of your house. But it's also good to be dependent thought, because its always good to have help from somebody, and someone will always rely on some body who will rely on some one else to do something for them so if that chain continues so we are all independent on each other in an odd way
In my opinion, iThink that it is best to "sometimes" be dependent on someone in some ocasions or insodences but always keep a Independent mind.....

Mr. Flynn, this is too true. The individual must work for themselves. I talked about this on my show. If the government provides everything for people, from income to healthcare, then the incentive to work is gone. People need to provide for themselves so they can become successful, without taking the easy way out. People who have the initiative to work for themselves and earn a good salary are ALWAYS more successful than those that accept the welfare check. GET THOSE WELFARE BUMS WORKING ALREADY.
